I have voted every election since I was of voting age and many
times I have been dissapointed that the party I voted for had
nowhere near the number of seats in the Legislature represented by
the percent of votes it had garnered. This has been
true both when the party I wanted to form the
governnment won or lost.
The whole idea of voting is to have all parties represented by
the percentage of people chosing them so that an ongoing debate can
occur without completely changing what went on in the years
before. We have a very unhealthy system at present. The
last two elections in BC point this out. No matter who
one voted for, there was a misrepresentation in the Legislature
according to the popular vote.
I would like to see a mixed member proportional [MMP] system as
they have in New Zealand. This would find all of us recognizing
after the election that our votes count. There should be a 4-5%
minimum number of votes needed for representation in
the Legislature, however, to make sure that the Legislature is not
too fractionalized.
