Abstract
|
I prefer a proportional voting system, similar to what some
European countries have, in which smaller parties with a minimum of
5% of the vote will usually receive a seat. This, in my opinion
reflects more democratic representation. [1 page]

Suggestions to change our voting system
When I voted in the past I often did not vote for the party that
best matches my desires, because of the way our voting system
works. Under our present, non-proportional voting system, smaller
parties with good ideas seldom get a chance to be represented in
our government. The parties win a majority of the seats often on
less than 50% of the vote. At the moment, close to 60% of the
Liberal caucus comes from just one province. I don't find this
acceptable.
Personally I would, therefore, prefer a proportional voting system,
similar to what some European countries have, in which smaller
parties with a minimum of 5% of the vote will usually receive a
seat. This, in my opinion reflects a more democratic
representation, and allows for different opinions of other parties
to be heard as well. There is nothing wrong with coalition
governments, in my view; they work quite well in some other
countries.
