I would like you to consider the MMP as the most fair of the
electoral systems, as local representation and smaller parties will
give more discussion and less midnight decision making in
parliament. This should lead to better negotiated legislation and
more co-operation and less strength to lobby groups. The share of
the votes will be closer to the share of available seats, which is
much better than our present inequality.
I think it is well worth trying for the future good
of BC and hopefully there will be less voter apathy when
people realise their vote really can make a difference. They can be
more honest in their voting. Now people vote because they want to
back a winner, or they find their own beliefs are in a
minority party which is a lost cause, so why bother?
It would have to be well publicised. I'm afraid the
newspaper you sent out explaining the choices, although clear,
takes too much reading and contemplation for most busy people, so
you might get a better response from something shorter and more
direct. The paper could be available as a followup at
libraries for those who want more in depth information.
One bright card with very basic salient facts and a reply-paid tear
off side of choice for you to consider, would get more results than
you are likely to garner this way or at meetings I think.
Many civilisations have gone from slavery to empowerment and
eventually back to apathy and enslavement, and somehow the general
public needs to be aware of the importance of preserving democracy
or revert to third world dictatorship and corruption. I
think the Mixed Member Proportional Vote is our best
hope.
