I favour the MMP system of proportional representation. This
would allow people to vote for the party of their choosing rather
than being forced to vote strategically to avoid splitting the
vote. For too long, we've been stuck in a tweedledum and tweedledee
conundrum. We need more voices in the political system to challenge
the other parties. Proportional Representation would be a good
start for much needed political reforms in this country. I think
this system should be adopted both provincially and federally. Most
Canadians voted against free trade in the 1989 election but again
the vote was split between the Liberals and the NDP so the
Conservatives won the election.
I think we need to go further with political reforms such as
developing a system to make elected politicians fully accountable
to the public. So if they are not doing what they said they were
going to do and they do the opposite of what they promised, there
should be some way of discontinuing their term. Also, I think
people should be allowed to choose candidates.
I really hope we can see some changes soon.
