The idea that a particular electoral system is "sacred" and
"untouchable" is ridiculous. As societies grow and change their
institutions need to grow with them. I expect my vote to count. In
recent elections it hasn't. If forty percent of an electorate are
at odds with an incumbent government, I expect 40% of the
parliamentary voices to reflect this.
Coalition governments -- rather than being a detriment to good
government -- can force politicians to come up with truly creative
solutions and, most importantly, will prevent anyone from
proceeding with agendas whose implications have not been fully
thought out.
Almost nothing is more abhorrent to me than the idea (encouraged by
our current electoral system) that I should vote out of
fear to prevent someone else from being elected. Such a
system is an insult to my intelligence and integrity and we should
do all we can to do away with it.
