I am troubled by the number of people coming forward to say they
are not voting in the coming federal election. I heard similar
sentiments before the last provincial election. Over and over I
heard people saying that their vote meant nothing; that if they
voted with their heart it would be a wasted vote and they didn't
feel right doing strategic voting to keep out a certain party. And
it has been obvious in the past 7 years that provincially the
majority of citizens have not been represented in parliament.
I feel strongly that the mixed member proportional [MMP] voting
system as proposed by Adriane Carr and the Pro Rep Society would
address the issue of people wanting their vote to count for
something even if they are not voting for one of the two or three
major political parties. It would also give more balanced
representation of people's political choices in parliament.
To increase the ridings sizes slightly and have 1/3 of the total
seats available to represent the popular vote of each party is a
most sensible and fair approach to amending the electoral
system.
Thanks to all of the members of the Citizens' Assembly on
Electoral Reform for the time you are putting in on this most
important proposal.
