The present system leads to confrontation and adversarial
politics. Many citizens feel disenfranchised and don't bother to
vote as they feel that their vote will be wasted. This is
particularly true of young voters.
In order to provide participatory democracy, we must introduce a
system of proportional representation whereby every vote
counts.
Canada desperately needs proportional representation as by the
time BC's votes are counted, the result of the election is already
decided. In order to facilitate National change we must change our
own system in BC and show that we are true supporters of Democracy
and that we embrace diversity, which defines us as a Nation and as
a Province.
Mixed pro-rep seems [MMP] to be the
most fair and well-tried system. I would suggest a
threshold of 5% so that the Legislature does not become unwieldy or
unstable and that frivolous parties do not hamper good
Government.
This change needs to take place as soon as possible while the
topic is still hot. Sometimes the number of non- voters is greater
than the number of seats granted the governing party.
If we lose this opportunity, we also lose democracy and invite the
possibility of anarchy as citizens increasingly are not
participating in the electoral process.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this process and
I sincerely hope that the Assembly will choose a system that is
fairer and more democratic than our present system.
