VOTER RANKS ALL PARTIES AT THE POLLS.
Currently, the election process allows the public to cast only
one vote. The voter’s second and third choice, etc.
remains a mystery using this method. A sliding scale system,
therefore, would better serve the public by giving a more accurate
account of the voter’s perception of all
parties. Traditionally, we mark one
“X” by our favourite candidate. A
sliding-scale system would allow the voter to rank all of the
candidates in their riding according to their perspective. This
would be accomplished by marking a number beside each candidate on
the ballot. The voter’s first choice receives a
“I”; second choice,
“2”; third choice,
“3” and so on. At the end of the day,
scrutineers would total the numbers beside each candidate. The
winner is the candidate with the lowest number (incomplete ballots
don’t count).
I conducted my own tiny survey with such a ‘Ranking
System’ ballot and found that it tends to elevate the
more moderate Parties.
