I am writing to express my support for a change in the way in
which we elect our provincial representatives.
I am in favour of a Mixed Proportional Representation
[MMP] system, as I belive this will provide us with much
more effective representation in the legislature. I anticipate that
the currently smaller parties will be able to win seats in the
house. This should result in a much broader representation of
public views, encourage greater cooperation between parties and
reduce the highly competitive relations and acrimony currently
being displayed. I believe that British Columbians have grown weary
of the ping-pong politics of the past 40 years. It is long past
time for a change to a more inclusive and effective system.
If we can change to a Mixed Proportional Representation system, I
belive we will see much greater involvement in the election process
by all our citizens, and most importantly, by our youngest
citizens.
If we can put an MMP system in place, we should limit the
assignment of non-constituency seats to only those parties winning
a minimum of 5% of the popular vote. Non-constituency seats should
make up no more than 35% of the total seats in the House. We should
also try to find ways to make the selection procesp for Party
representatives more inclusive and effective.
I appreciate this opportunity to express my views on this very
important matter. I am also very appreciative of all the work of
the members of the Citizens' Assembly. I commend you all for your
efforts.
