I am a 29-year-old student and citizen of British Columbia. I am
a past participant of Canada World Youth and I am currently
completing an MA in Montreal, Quebec. As I will not be able to be
home in time to attend a citizens assembly meeting, I would like to
state my total support for a Mixed Proportional Representation
[MMP] Voting system.
I am well aware of the low voter turn out within British Columbia
and Canada, especially among the youth population. I have spoken
with many people (young and old) who agree that our current voting
system is not reaching and representing the interests of the people
of British Columbia. When citizens do not feel represented, then
they loose hope, initiative and motivation to be involved in the
political arena. As a 'youth' of today, I am strongly urging
British Columbia to adopt a Mixed Proportional Representation
voting system. I was never involved in politics until I heard (two
years ago) about this type of a system. Now I feel encouraged and
motivated that I can actually make a difference and that my voice
will be heard.
We need to free our vote and transform our system to become a
contemporary example for others to follow. Let's be
proud of our democracy and work to make it even better.
