A first step to making government more accountable is by making
the electoral system much more
representative of the votes actually cast. The best way that I am
aware of to achieve this goal is a mixed member proportional (MMP)
system very much like the one adopted and in use in New Zealand.
Other systems which claim to accomplish this aim, such as the STV
method are unnecessarily complicated for ease of use and when
examined, would appear to be less democratic than the MMP
method.
We must do this because too many citizens feel disenfrancised
under the current first-past-the-post system. Certainly, our
current system is not nearly as democratic as it should be in this
modern age. Government credibility is important and at this time is
sadly lacking in both Ottawa and in Victoria. The public is really
getting very turned off with respect to election voting.
